The role of selected sociodemographic factors in the perception of the conditions for professional development in the current workplace by people employed in a cultural institution
Abstract
The article tackles the issue of employees of cultural institutions proffesional development. The goal of the work was to diagnose the perception of the possibility of proffesional growth in their current workplace by people hired in cultural institutions considering their sociodemographic traits. Research was conducted by surveying 106 employees of cultural institutions of different kinds in the Mazowieckie and Lubelskie voivodeships. An original questionnaire was used. Research questions have been formulated: How are the conditions for proffesional growth seen by the surveyed cultural institution employees? Do sociodemographic variables substantially differentiate the perception of conditions for proffesional growth by the surveyed cultural institution employees? It was established, that the considered sociodemographic traits have a limited influence on the perception of the cultural institution employees on the conditions for proffestional growth in their current workplace. People hired in cultural institutions consider them to require a high level of ambition, tenacity, initiative, and efficiency from the employee. However, they offer the possibility of proffesional fulfillment in an interesting, responsible job, improwing their qualifications in an institution ran smoothly by supervisors conducive to proffesional growth of their subordinates even despite a lack of opportunities for a promotion or high wages. The highier the surveyed person’s education, the more clear this image becomes. It is worrying however, that a high percentage of the surveyed employees confirm the presence of phenomena possibly suggesting a „rat race” atmosphere. Moreover, even if the people surveyed confirm a possibility of achievining proffesional stability in their current workplace, at the same time many of them are certain, that their proffestional situation will significantly worsen in the near future.
