Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) as a Method of Supporting Adolescents with Borderline Personality Disorders and Their Families

Abstract


The aim of this article is to present borderline personality disorder and to show the practical use of selected support programs related to mentalization-based therapy (MBT). The paper uses a literature review method and the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, ResearchGate. When searching for research materials, the following keywords were used: borderline, youth, family, MBT therapy, personality disorders. Currently, the occurrence of borderline personality disorder is becoming more and more common not only in adults but also in youth. This is an important topic because more and more young people suffer from mental problems. The paper focuses on what personality disorders are. Then, borderline personality disorder is characterized, taking into account its genesis and prevalence. Another aspect was to present the issue related to MBT. Considering the specificity of the problem, potential preventive measures were also indicated. During the analysis of the problem, reference was made to various meta-analyses of research in the discussed area. Particular attention was paid to examples of support programs that were related to MBT for borderline adolescents and families. Their use contributed to improved functioning and greater life satisfaction.
