Postpartum Depression in Mothers and Fathers – Differences and Similarities. A Review of Previous Research
Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze the differences and similarities in the perception of postpartum depression among mothers and fathers, which may be crucial for its prevention and treatment depending on the gender of the affected parent. To achieve this, the academic databases Google Scholar and PubMed were searched. A total of 26 articles were included in the review. The analysis indicates that mental health disorders associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are a prevalent concern. One of the most common of these is postpartum depression – a mood disorder occurring after childbirth. It is estimated that approximately 10–20% of mothers and about 10% of fathers experience postpartum depression, understood as a major depressive episode. Research-confirmed risk factors differ by gender, as does the clinical presentation of the disorder, which, despite the lack of gender-specific diagnostic criteria, may manifest differently in men. Depending on whether the mother or the father is affected, the consequences of postpartum depression vary slightly for the individual, the child, the partner, and the entire family. Treatment approaches also differ by gender, particularly due to concerns about medication use during breastfeeding and the consequences of early separation of the newborn from the mother.
