How much pluralism in liberalism? John Stuart Mill and Isaiah Berlin

Kamil Aksiuto

Abstract

The article deals with the implications of pluralism, in various meanings of the term, for the liberalisms of two authors: John Stuart Mill and Isaiah Berlin. The question of pluralism, including value pluralism of which Mill is not a supporter, but which is embraced by Berlin, is discussed in connection with other crucial notions for both thinkers: an ideal of individuality for Mill and negative liberty in Berlin’s case. As a result, their respective liberalisms differ significantly, especially with regard to the desirable level of cultural diversity at the international level and within liberal societies.
