Medieval Sports in the Face of Criticism Based on Selected Sources
Abstract
The subject of the article is an attempt to answer the question about the causes, nature and effects of the criticism made against some sports popular in medieval Latin Europe. By examining this issue, the author analyzes selected threads devoted to the criticism of sports, which he finds in written sources, such as narrative works (chronicles, didactic treatises, visual literature, exempla and homiletic writings), as well as documentary sources (decisions of councils and synods, royal edicts, etc.). The article enriches the existing knowledge about medieval sports, showing various social and cultural conditions in which critical attitudes were adopted.
