The cultural concept of vlast [homeland]: An insight into the worldview of Czech university students

Irena Vaňková, Jan Huleja

Abstract

The article presents the results of a questionnaire survey focused on the cultural concept of vlast (´homeland´) in contesmporary Czech, carried out within the framework of the international EUROJOS project. Data collection took place in the autumn of 2024 among students from four Czech universities. A total of 100 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. On this basis, it was found that the cultural concept of vlast embraces six main semantic aspects: 1) territorial, 2) emotional, 3) genetic, 4) linguistic and cultural-historical, 5) social, and 6) residential. Furthermore, the questionnaire revealed that contemporary Czech students do not perceive the concept of vlast as controversial, although they are not uncritical of its real denotation. They express a positive, usually emotionally motivated relationship to their “homeland”, their (native) country, often specifically  the Czech Republic, and attach high value to vlast.
